Special numerical facts about 2011

by Kingsley on July 1, 2011

It’s uncommon I find a circular e-mail worth, well, circulating, but here is an exception. Did you know that this month, July, is the only month we will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays? This happens only once every 823 years, so it’s safe to say those of us reading this will not experience it again. Also, 2011 is the only year we will see these very special numerical dates: 1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11 and 11/11/11. And to make these 1′s more intriguing, add the last two digits of the year you were born to the age you are/will be this year, and the number should equal 111 for everyone, except those born in 2000 and beyond, which will be 11.

Egypt’s Ex-President Hosni Mubarak’s fortune

by Kingsley on February 12, 2011

If you’re wondering what Mubarak has amassed over 30 years of serving his country, here’s the lowdown according to a CNN report (video):

Estimated fortune: US40-US75 billon dollars. To put that in perspective, the richest man in the world, Carlos Slim Helu, has an approximate fortune of US53.5 billion dollars. That puts Mubarak the 2nd richest man in the low end, or easily the richest man on earth in the high end. Compare that to the median annual income of Egypt at US$2,070, and 20-percent of Egyptians living in poverty–making less than US$2.00 per day–and you see why the country and its people can’t afford to keep him in office for another day.

Egypt is finally free!

by Kingsley on February 12, 2011

After 18 days of brave and relentless protest by the people of Egypt, (Ex)-President Hosni Mubarak is stepping down immediately (11 February 2011). What a life-changing day for the Egyptians, and a lesson of hope, unity and perseverance learned by all.

Inaugural

by Kingsley on January 21, 2009

It’s 12:30AM in Hong Kong, and I’m getting ready to go over to my friend’s house to watch President Obama’s Inaugural Address. All the TV stations here will be broadcasting the event live. I don’t remember ever getting this excited over any president giving out talks to the public in the past. Let us all witness this history in the making.

Mark this day

by Kingsley on November 5, 2008

For on November 4th 2008 Americans elected our first black president of the United States. It’s a century overdue, but worth the wait. Barack Obama is smart, charismatic, calm and bi-racial. Both blacks and whites should be proud to have him represent them, as should all other Americans. Now when people in other countries call Americans hypocrites, I can finally respond in all honesty: We are not hypocrites, we have an African-American president.

Next on the to-do list for United States: a woman president.

For a cause

by Kingsley on May 21, 2008

I can’t imagine a more meaningful way to restart my blog than to ask that we pay our respect to the thousands upon thousands of lives lost this month in two world catastrophic events. For those surviving victims of the Myanmar cyclone and Sichuan earthquake, their hope of a return to normalcy is still far into the distance…

But we can do our part to bring that distance closer. Please donate through your local Red Cross or by other means. My family, friends, and co-workers have all donated. I feel blessed that I’m surrounded by their warm hearts whenever they’re needed.
